Some people might think we're crazy, but we took Zoey on her first car trip at 3 weeks old. We figured, she's going to be eating, sleeping and crying somewhere, it might as well be somewhere pretty. I've wanted to go to the Scottish Highlands since coming across pictures of the Isle of Skye on Pinterest. I couldn't wait to see it in person.
Living in Northern England gives us great access to the Scottish Highlands. From our house to Glasgow is only four hours. Of course, everything takes significantly longer with a baby, but we built in lots of extra time. And we had plenty of scenic diaper changes :)
We were already having a great time before we even got to Scotland. Our first lunch stop was at the Llama Karma Kafe, a quirky restaurant with live llamas. The food was just OK, but watching the llamas from our table was fun.
We stayed in Helensborough for our first night. There wasn't much to do in this town--especially after 5pm when we arrived--but we were blown away with our B&B. Zoey's first hotel really set the bar high. The breakfast the next morning (my birthday!!) was top notch. You don't see pancakes and french toast on most European menus. With some fresh fruit my birthday breakfast was perfect.
We spent my birthdaynursing Zoey exploring the beautiful A83--a major road on the shore of Loch Lomand. Luss was a particular highlight along this road. It was a quaint village exploding with colorful flowers.
Since we were stopping every 45 minutes to feed our tiny terrorist bundle of joy, we were really able to appreciate Loch Lomand's beauty. Even the hydroelectric power plant was pretty!
Eventually we made it to Glencoe and had time for a short hike to a waterfall behind our B&B before dinner. I absolutely love how much daylight we get in the summer. It doesn't get dark until around 9pm these days.
We ate a lovely birthday dinner at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles. We had deliciously fresh salmon prepared three ways, and a yummy brownie that Dan didn't even make me share with him. That's true love.
